Featured: Be aware of how you present yourself to employers

“With Facebook and other social media, we encourage students to think twice about anything that could be accessed about them off the internet by employers, and whether or not that is something they would like employers to see. We have heard stories from employers who have typed a name into a search and found things the applicant really would not want them to see. Some have been at the point of almost making an offer, but then found out something about the applicant on the internet that caused them to not extend the offer after all. Basic things like the voicemail message you have on your phone — is that something you would like an employer to hear? The same thing goes for creative email addresses. Hottie4U is not a good email address to be giving to employers. We heard from an employer recently who was calling a student to make an offer and the voicemail message they got was raunchy; it was not professional. That employer hung up the phone and went on to the next person. They did not make the job offer because of that. So those are things that you might not think about, but really make a difference when it comes to the job market. And that is not just for full-time jobs after graduation. That is for employers who are hiring for internships or part-time jobs. You really want to think twice before presenting yourself in ways that might backfire.”
