Misconceptions about life after high school

“You only have a certain amount of tries in life before you realize that your chances are up and you’re stuck working some low-paying job to pay off your debt. At least at the high school level, my impression was that the world is full of opportunity: if I try hard enough, I will make it. You pick a career when you’re in high school, you work hard, you get there, you start making all this money and you live happily ever after. I think that’s a very unrealistic picture that they instill in kids. I don’t even know what gave me that impression, but that was the impression and I’m sure a lot of people share that. The reality is that the real world is like a minefield, full of mines that you could step on at any given point in the journey. The lesson I’ve learned is you have to pick yourself up and go around, but if you can surround yourself with people who have been through the journey and ask them what lies ahead, I think they’ll be a very valuable resource.”
